== Why ==
As part of a plan of contingency, should the rest of the world fall to [[Combine]] control, the United States Government began engineering the disease. The rings were created from hyper-energetic bacteria which consumed any and all manners of organic material laid before them. The rings were first tested on captive Combine soldiers in the [[Black Mesa|Black MESA Research Facility]]. 

The Science Team Captain, [[Tyren White, PhD|Dr. Tyren White]], had encouraged torturing Combine troops, rather than capturing innocent civilians, as torture of prisoners of war was a patriotic American Tradition. 

The disease leaked from the lab and spread to U.S. President George H.W. Bush, who then traveled to Australia on diplomatic business. George H.W. Bush was Patient Zero of Flopsi-Synchronic Ringsplit Immolation.

Over 9 million Australians died from this disease, and most of the rest of the population perished thirty years later after the unwelcome arrival of the [[Downward Spiral]] over of most of Australia.
